Sofía Vergara has issued a legal response nearly two weeks after her husband of seven years, Joe Manganiello, filed for divorce.
The "Modern Family" star asked a Los Angeles court to dissolve her marriage with Manganiello due to irreconcilable differences and uphold the pair's prenuptial agreement, according to court documents obtained by USA TODAY Tuesday. Manganiello also made these requests in his July 19 divorce filing, which came two days after the couple issued a statement to Page Six confirming their separation.
The two married in November 2015 and have been separated since July 2, according to the documents.
In their individual filings, they both asked the court to separate their assets, such as jewelry and artwork, as well as their earnings accrued both before and since their marriage.
USA TODAY has reached out to Vergara and Manganiello's representatives for comment.
"We have made the difficult decision to divorce," the couple said in the statement to Page Six. "As two people that love and care for one another very much, we politely ask for respect of our privacy at this time as we navigate this new phase of our lives."
Joe Manganiello posted about Sofía Vergara for her birthday, Valentine's Day
In the months leading up to their split, Manganiello posted affectionate messages for his wife on social media, including a birthday shoutout last month that has since been deleted and a Valentine's Day post in February.
"I love you Sofía," Manganiello wrote alongside a photo of the couple on Feb. 15.
Vergara and Manganiello tied the knot on Nov. 17, 2015, with a star-studded ceremony at The Breakers Resort in Palm Beach, Florida. "Modern Family" cast members were among the guests in attendance, as well as Reese Witherspoon and Channing Tatum, according to People magazine.
Vergara wore a heart-shaped, silk tulle Zuhair Murad couture dress for the couple's nuptials. The then-newlyweds reportedly asked that in lieu of gifts, guests send a donation to one of two charities close to their hearts: St. Jude's Children's Hospital and Pittsburgh Children's Hospital.
Over the course of their seven-year marriage, Vergara wasn't afraid to defend her relationship with Manganiello. In May 2017, the "America's Got Talent" judge slammed the unnamed editor of the tabloid magazine Star on her Instagram page, outraged at the magazine's cover story which featured headlines such as "it's over!" and "her wedding ring is off."
"The editor of this magazine is an idiot if he is going to have my ring removed to create a 'fake news,'" Vergara wrote at the time. "He should have made sure that he removed from social media all the other pictures of that award night in Rome where I’m wearing it."
Vergara was previously married to Joe Gonzalez, with whom she shares son Manolo Vergara. The couple divorced in 1993. The actress was also engaged to businessman Nick Loeb, but the couple called off their engagement in May 2014.
